A king went down alone
There was a feast that night. Wine ran in the fountains, and every window of the palace was lit.
Somewhere beneath all that light there was a vault, and in the vault an old black mirror that nobody was meant to touch. Before midnight the king left his own table. Nobody followed him.
What he did down there, and why, is told differently by everyone who survived to tell it.
Every lamp in the long gallery bent its flame toward the north, all together, as if a door had been opened somewhere very far away and the wind was coming through it. Brother Tamsin, lamplighter
Then the mountains opened,
and the light that came out was red.
Ash fell until dawn
By morning the capital was a ruin with a new name, and something old was roosting in the peaks.
That was nineteen years ago. The roads are still there. So are the taverns, the temples, and the people who learned to live under a sky that is never quite clean.
They do not talk about the mirror. They talk about the weather, the price of bread, and which passes are closed.
Four pieces. One of them is looking back.
It was made to hold a dream that was not ours. It held for six hundred years.
Move your light across the glass
He cannot touch them. So they are carried for him, from lair to lair, and never rest in the same place twice.
Something stands in every door
Between one land and the next there is a single pass, and across each pass hangs a veil the colour of a bruise.
The veils are bound to four lives. People have names for them. People do not go to look.
An order of knights fell that night.
All but one.
You were raised for this
An old master-at-arms kept one pupil hidden, and taught them four things: strike, strike harder, hold, and turn the blow aside.
The rest you will have to find out there, in the fields and the forest, in the drowned places and the broken ones, with a rusty sword and whatever you can take from the dead.
Nobody is certain the mirror can be made whole. Nobody is certain what happens if it is.
